ENEC Supports Emirati Talent At Emirates Skills
(14 April 2014)

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has underlined its commitment to developing young Emirati talent by announcing a platinum sponsorship for EmiratesSkills, which aims to develop an Emirati workforce to meet the needs of the UAE’s growing science-based industries, including the nuclear energy sector.

Nuclear energy is set to play an important role in the UAE’s future energy supply, delivering up to a quarter of the UAE’s electricity needs by 2020. ENEC will need around 2000 employees by this time to operate its four nuclear energy plants and help deliver safe, clean, reliable and efficient nuclear energy to the nation.

ENEC is working to ensure Emiratis play a critical role in the nuclear energy industry, with a 60 percent Emiratization target. To achieve this goal, ENEC offers a range of scholarships and career opportunities to the most promising Emirati science students through its Energy Pioneers program.

“We are looking for the nation’s most talented and ambitious students, who understand the level of commitment and dedication required to become a part of the UAE’s nuclear energy program, which is one of the most significant energy programs in the UAE today,” said Mohamed Al Hammadi, Chief Executive Officer of ENEC.

To date, ENEC has awarded scholarships to approximately 300 Emiratis for a range of programs. More than 130 students are enrolled in the Higher Diploma in Nuclear Technology (HDNT) program, which prepares students for a specialist and hands-on career in the nuclear industry.

ENEC’s overriding priority across all of its operations, including its human capital development programs, is safety. Throughout all of ENEC’s training and development programs, students and employees participate in regular safety workshops to ensure they understand the importance of a robust safety culture at ENEC, and their role in ensuring ENEC achieves the highest safety standards every day.

“We are developing a world-class program. We are committed to the highest standards of safety, quality and efficiency, and our people are at the heart of this promise. We demand the very best from our team at all times, and a total commitment to the highest standards of quality and safety in everything they do,” continued Mr. Al Hammadi.

The HDNT program offers students a combination of theoretical education and practical experience to prepare them for critical technical careers at the UAE’s nuclear energy plants. Students can choose from a range of specialisms, which range from Nuclear Reactor Operator, Instrumentation & Control Technologist, Mechanical Technologist, Chemistry Technologist, Electrical Technologist or Radiation Protection Technologist. At the end of the program, students graduate with a diploma, as well as a Job Qualification Certificate (JQC).

ENEC is committed to providing safe, reliable, clean and efficient nuclear energy to the UAE and is leading the construction of the UAE’s first nuclear energy plants, which are located in Barakah, in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi.

A total of four nuclear energy plants will be constructed by 2020, pending regulatory approvals. The first two plants are already under construction, with the first plant scheduled to commence commercial operations in 2017, pending further regulatory approvals.
